BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Alan Sims - President
Alan made a commitment to protect and defend the nation and the Constitution when he took the oath to become a military officer. As a combat fighter pilot and operational planning director, three decades of service brought him to the Pentagon as an international policy director.
Service in the national capital solidified Alan’s closely held belief that it is God that raises up nations. The United States became an Exceptional Nation because it enjoyed divine favor. Enduring enjoyment of providential protection will require us to develop the moral fiber and respect for timeless principles exemplified by our founders, and by previous generations.
Alan founded the National Character Association to help strengthen the core of the nation – the character of her citizens.
A native of Georgia, Alan is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He holds both a Master of Religion and Master of Divinity from Liberty University. He now considers Virginia home, where he can trace his ancestors to Colonial times.
Alan has a passion for world history and international travel, which he enjoys together with his wife, Vanessa, during their time off.
Michel Shoemaker - Secretary/Treasurer
Michel is a Senior Accountant with more than 20 years of corporate experience. She credits the prosperity and freedoms enjoyed by the United States to be the result of the timeless principles of America’s foundation, along with the strong character of previous generations.
A native of Pittsburgh, Michel is a lifelong learner. She holds numerous degrees, including Bachelor of Human Resources from Geneva College in Pennsylvania, and an MBA with Accounting Concentration from Loyola University, Maryland. Michel’s interest in safeguarding America’s Godly heritage began in college, while conducting research of Roe v. Wade for a speech class. She moved to the Washington DC area to work and to gain greater perspective about government operations. She now considers the metro area to be home.
Holding a Christian Worldview, Michel believes future generations must develop strong character so the United States can continue to enjoy Providential Protection. Her passion for praying for our nation has resulted in a desire to educate others about America’s great history. These reasons account for why she is excited to be a part of the mission and vision of NCA.
Michel has had a longstanding interest is traveling both the United States and internationally. She considers climbing Mt. Masada, near the Dead Sea in Israel in 2017 to be her best accomplishment during her travels so far.
Carroll Eads - Prayer Coordinator
Carroll is a dedicated intercessor, passionate for our nation to experience revival. She serves as the Virginia Prayer Coordinator for Reformation Prayer Network and works closely with Capitol Hill Prayer Partners and other intercessory groups in and around the National Capitol Region. Carroll prays weekly with Christians in the arts and entertainment industry as a partner with the Hollywood Prayer Network. Additionally, she works with Teach the Children International, addressing the United Nations on behalf of the Sahrawi People of the Western Sahara.
An avid reader, teacher, speaker and writer, Carroll has developed and taught Bible classes, and is currently working two inspirational books. Keen for individuals to operate in God’s purposes for their lives, Carroll completed courses in practical ministry at the Oral Roberts University Training and Development Institute in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and works part-time as a receptionist.
Carroll is a native of Texas and made the metro Washington DC area her home with her husband after he completed service as an officer in the US Marines. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.
Susan Ashcraft - Director
Susan is a veteran law enforcement officer with a heart for helping and protecting others. Her career spans more than thirty years, and includes service as a Police Officer in Houston, Texas, and as a Federal Agent at the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Her experience is broad, first as a line officer, ascending to service as an inspector and manger in the DEA. Susan has taught law enforcement to organizations across the United States and around the world.
A graduate of the University of Texas, Susan also holds an Honorary Doctorate from Latin University of Theology and is a licensed minister. She has served as clergy in several churches and prison ministries, and currently volunteers as a hospital chaplain.
Susan serves on the Board of Kids Konnection, which ministers to high risk youth in Washington DC, and on the advisory board of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. She has preached and ministered throughout the United States and Africa.
Susan has a passion for character development, and a desire to see people become their best. Both ministry and law enforcement are disciplines that building stronger character, and give her unique insight into this important objective.
Aaron Wong - Digital Director
Aaron is a pioneer, applying digital technology toward positive political outcomes. A native of New Zealand, he became a US Citizen in 2013, and defends the US Constitution with more than 10 years of experience in technology, digital and politics.
Aaron holds Bachelor of Political Science from the University of Southern California. While there, he served as president of USC College Republicans. Since then he has been involved in some of the largest political campaigns in history. From 2017 to 2019, he served as the Senior Director of Digital Technology at the Republican National Committee. In that role, he created some of the most robust technology and data foundations for the party to date.
Aaron is currently a Managing Director at Targeted Victory, a leading digital and public affairs firm. He brings his professional skills and talents to the NCA, where he serves as Director of Technology and Innovation.
Exercising his talents and skills beyond the politics, Aaron is highly involved in various ministries. A gifted musician, Aaron also possesses an eye for the aesthetic, and is a professional photographer. During nights and weekends, Aaron can usually be found spending time with friends and loved ones.
Vanessa Sims - Financial & Policy Advisor
Vanessa is passionate about organizational excellence and believes the policies and practices of non-profits should be above reproach. As Financial and Policy Advisor, she helps the NCA Board of Directors maintain compliance with government requirements and implement the best of corporate practices.
Growing up in an Air Force family, Vanessa traveled extensively and developed appreciation for America’s leadership role in the world. She believes character and strength are developed when the nation stands for what is right.
Today, Vanessa is a policy director for the Joint Staff at the Pentagon. She works closely with our European allies to ensure collaborative impact on national security matters. With more than sixteen years of government service, she has previously served as a financial analyst for the Air Force, and as a military liaison to the United States Congress.
Vanessa is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Liberty University. Additionally, she holds a Master of National Security Studies from the Eisenhower School at the National Defense University.
When she isn’t working, Vanessa loves to grill brisket, explore history and travel internationally with her husband, Alan.
